How to use CSS Class

Can you provide an example of how to use a CSS Class, what to enter in the CSS Class field in a Field Preferences dialogue and the corresponding entry in the CSS/CustomSite.css file please? I'm trying to change the background colour for a field and am struggling to get this to work.
