Invalid ServicePort Configured

The following error may appear after changing the ServicePort in the dbFront web.config or the dbFrontService.exe.config.  This error may appear directly within the web application or you may see this error in the dbFrontService log file:

  • Invalid ServicePort: The ports 80 and 443 are reserved for IIS.
  • They should not be used for communications between the dbFront Web Application and the dbFront Service.

This error means that the ServicePort was incorrectly set to either 80 (HTTP) or 443 (SSL).

It may be natural to assume that dbFront as a web application should be listening on port 80 or 443 but that is incorrect.

Ports 80 and 443 are reserved for use by IIS (Microsoft Internet Information Server) and other web servers. Those ports are used when browsers connect to a web server.

The dbFront web application is installed within IIS as one of many web applications and it is the responsibility of IIS to pass the appropriate traffic to the dbFront web application.

By default the dbFront Web Application uses port 42057 to communicate with the dbFront Service.  This should only be changed if there is a conflicting application on the server or if a split install of the dbFront web application and the dbFront service necessitate communications on a different port number.
